Ramleela Mela is generally
held in almost every part of India to celebrate
the return of Lord Rama from exile. Although legends
vary with region and geographic demarcations but
the motive is the same all through. The main intention
behind Ramleela is to ward off the evil forces
from nature so that it becomes purified and sanctity
and peace prevails everywhere. There are some
renowned places where a fair is held along with
the Ramleela Festival. In Gwalior too, Rashtriya
Ramleela Mela, Madhya Pradesh is held with great
exuberance.
History
Varanasi is considered to be among the oldest
living cities in the world. According to historians,
the history of the city dates back to ten centuries
before the birth of Christ.
However, it was only when Shankaracharya established
Shiva-worship as the principal sect within this
country that Varanasi gained true prominence.
The ghats, numbering approximately 80, and various
temples sprawled across the banks of the Ganges
are host to extensive pilgrims and several rituals,
thus establishing their prominence within the
overall ambience of the city. Several ancient
historians have compared the religious prominence
of this city to that of Mecca and Jerusalem.
