The Easter Festival is observed
with great celebrations in the State of Kerala
in the southern part of India. The Festival of
Easter in Kerala is the oldest Christian Festival
and is celebrated with the same keenness and seriousness
as in any other part of the world. The Easter
Festival is held with Easter Sunday and the celebrations
of the Easter memorialize the central tent of
Christianity, the resurgence of Jesus Christ.
The word 'Easter' is derived from the Norse Ostara
or Eostre, meaning the festival of spring at the
vernal equinox. Easter word is also derived from
Eastra a goddess of dawn or Spring. It was at
the feast of Passover in Jerusalem that Jesus
Christ was crucified and rose from the dead. A
name for Easter, therefore, is Pasch, and Churches
throughout the world celebrate Easter as a major
feast giving it great important like Christmas.
The principal Mexican solar festival was held
at the vernal equinox, i.e., Easter, when sacrifices
were made to sustain the sun. In India, the vernal
equinox festival is called "Holi" and
is especially sacred to the god Krishna. The Syrian
sun and fertility god Attis was annually hung
on a tree, dying and rising on March 24th and
25th, an "Easter celebration" that occurred
at Rome as well.
The Christians gather in large masses in churches
and thank Jesus, the savior of the whole humanity
on the occasion of Easter. Usually it is a midnight
mass. On this day Christian who have kept fast
for the Lent period break their fast. Before breaking
the fast, Christians go to the church for the
Holy Communion. After this, they greet each other,
wishing each other 'Happy Easter'.
