The Attractions of
the Nehru Boat Race, 2007
The festival inaugural ceremony is a
procession of snake boats and several other race
boats which from stunning formation in the serene
lake. The snake boats are100 feet long boats that
resemble raised hood of a snake. These snake boats
can have a seating capacity of over100 people.
As the race starts a boat is pulled by 100 oarsmen
and around 10 other fellow participants cheer
their team to keep enthusiasm and excitement alive.
The teams are deicided according to villages.
The track length of Nehru Boat race measures around
1400 meters or 1.4 kms.
Nehru Boat race is one of the eagerly awaited
events. The vent was first celebrated1952 to greet
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, former Prime Minister
of the country that year Pandit Nehru himself
gave the prize to the victor of the race- since
then the race has go the name of Nehru Boat race.
Every year this event celebrated on second Saturday
of August. Undoubtedly this festival is one of
the most colorful sports events in Kerala. Nehru
Boat race is held in the Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha.
